Source: IRINIRIN's new Web Special on Return and Reintegration outlines the difficulties facing millions of uprooted people worldwide as they return home. The main issues outlined include: uncertain statistics on refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs); lack of international aid coordination; and debates over responsibility to support returnees. The report argues that there need to be more attention and sustainable support for returnees and especially for IDPs. IRIN concludes that the process of returning home presents windows of opportunity for displaced persons; however, it is not an easy road and happy endings are far from guaranteed.

The main issues presented include: defining reintegration; enhancing coordination aid agencies; addressing insecurity and facilitating reconciliation; supporting sustainable livelihoods and economic recovery; and managing processes of urbanization. The authors argue that effective reintegration strategies are critical in the few years following the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in order to secure a more peaceful and prosperous future in Southern Sudan and the Three Areas.
