Democracy & Good Governance

Last Updated: December 18, 2008

Democracy and good governance was one of the four priority areas identified by the Government of Sierra Leone in consultation with the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) in 2006.  This section includes resources on efforts to assist Sierra Leone to establish laws, institutions, processes and practices to better manage the country’s political, economic, social and administrative affairs, as well as protect and promote fundamental rights and freedoms.  Information on the role of civil society, donors and the international community in this process is covered. Background is also offered on efforts to build the country’s economy and infrastructure, and promote financial accountability and transparency.  Special attention is devoted to the recent 2007 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, and the upcoming Local Council elections.
